Yazoo County often is called “The Gateway to the Delta.” It is perched on a hill just before you drive into the rich alluvial Delta land. Yazoo County residents have traditionally taken pride in the fact that they belong to both worlds of Mississippi, the Hills and the Delta. The county seat, Yazoo City, sits atop both of these worlds.

Yazoo City is known for embracing its rich and historic past and its hopeful future. Every street in downtown Yazoo City is fascinating. Its quality of design merited the entire district being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic buildings and churches are major attractions for visitors. A downtown revitalization in Yazoo City in recent years has brought new faces and a variety of new businesses in the area.

Shops like Gilbert’s on the corner of Main and Canal are filled with unique gifts and gourmet food items. Kudzu Korner Market “A Delicatessen” at Main and Broadway and attracts a steady stream of customers. Grace Hardware gets its name from the hardware store which formerly occupied the two-story building, which is well over 100 years old. Today it houses antiques, arts and crafts, and hand-made furniture built from antique wood.

The beauty of the city also has captured the attention of national movie producers. Such films as “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou,” “Miss Firecracker” and “Ghosts of Mississippi” have been filmed in part in Yazoo City.

Yazoo City Mayor McArthur Straughter is proud of his city and county. “We have so much to offer here. Our office is open, willing and ready to assist anyone who just wants to visit, move here, or open a business. We invite everyone to Yazoo City,” he says.
